Margie, the bus system is so good there, (and reasonably priced..65 cents) and parking is so bad, that i would do it unless your going to use a car for a day trip. tim

Take the Bus. It comes by every 3 to 5 minutes. I don't think you could get downtown and back with out meeting Officer Friendly. I was on a bus and even he received a ticket!

i honestly don't know how difficult it is to find parking at the grocery store. maybe someone can chime in with that info. another option to driving there or taking the bus downtow to the store is to check out what CancunValet.com has to offer. Vic can deliver lot's of stuff to you at the Casa Maya.

the Hotel Zone has one main street, Boulevard Kukulkan, so it is fairly easy to get to from anywhere. if you don't have it yet, i Highly recommend the CanDo Cancun Map and Guide. click on the 'Map' Link at the top of this page.

for newbies, i suggest day trips to Chichen Itza, Xel Ha and Isla Mujeres. you can se what i offer at the Link below. tim

you can always get a parking spot at the grocery stores (the big ones). During the day it is less crowded, at night you may have to park away from the entrance to the store and walk from the car, you know, like at home! :) Smile

Depending on which car agency you rent from will determine where in the Hotel Zone you can drop it off. The major agencies have a couple locations in the HZ. You hotel's address is Paseo Kukulcan 5.0 (there is only one road through the HOtel Zone. It starts downtown at 0, and continues around the Hotel Zone with a marker at each kilometer). So your hotel is at kilometer 5 from downtown.
So with that information you can go to car rental websites and see which one offers a location closest to 5.0. Or just rent from the one that gives you the best price and find a drop-off location in the Hotel Zone and take the bus back to your hotel.

Parking within the Hotel Zone isn't too bad. Many restaurants offer valet parking in the evenings. There is a parking garage at Forum Plaza which gives you easy access to the party center. Downtown parking on the streets is a challenge as most places to not have parking lots (except places like the big grocery stores). And again, nighttime is the hardest for finding a place, though it can be done. We always rent a car for our entire trip (keep in mind my husband is from Cancun and we need it to get out to where his family lives) and we usually use valet parking when we go out for dinner.

I have been to Cancun over 30 times and rent frenguently. However, I would suggest public transportation on your first trip. It is reasonable and gives you a chance to see the surroundings, without the distraction of heavy city traffic. Once you become familiar with the area and can handle aggressive drivers, renting is fine, but unless you plan on using it alot, it is very expensive sitting in the parking lot at your hotel.
