I'm still going, but....

I bought one ticket and used FF miles for the other with AA in October...$350 total and exchanged a week of my timeshare for $150. We're stopping at Sam's on the way to Puerto Aventuras to save on the restaurant bill. We are renting a car. I have to drive to Houston...215 miles one way, but my car gets 30 mpg. I think I did pretty good! ;)

p.s.
I do a lot of lurking and not a lot of posting. I enjoy the trip reports...lots of good info.

Tim, your thinking is backwards....we need to SPEND money to turn around the economy, otherwise it will never improve if everyone stops spending. I just got a new vehicle to HELP the economy. SPEND, SPEND, SPEND !!!
okay

send me $$$$ so i can spend too!! :D tim
economic stimulus check ...
janie 7/2/08 13:16

If I spend it in Mexico it won't be helping the US economy,
but it will help the Playa economy! :)

Honestly, it is scary ... food and gas keep going up, but my salary isn't. :(

another thing ...
janie 7/2/08 13:28

I was reading on another board that people who normally would take a 10 day trip are cutting back to 7 days, and people who would normally go for a week are cutting back to 4 or 5 days.

But people are still choosing Mexico over Punta Cana, Aruba and other
Caribbean destinations, because Mexico is the "better deal".

We gave up our Spring trip, due to other reasons (new furniture, a new computer and the damn IRS), but I'm hoping we don't have to give up our fall trip ... or I'll be strangling someone.

My mental health improves when I get a vacation! :D

for February, but that may change depending on how the next few months go with the businss and the economy. Since we did not do Cancun this year I would hate it if we missed 2 years in a row... on the other hand, eating is still important. :b

Don't forget that the air fare you bought IS helping the U.S. economy...also anything spent at the airport (parking, food, etc). Some people also book a hotel room near their airport if they have an early flight and don't live close to the airport. Also, all the purchases made for things needed for their trip (all those custom made bikinis the ladies bring), not to mention kennel fees for their pets....all these help boost our economy also, not just Mexico's, so get out there, be a good American and book a trip !!! And don't rip the IRS...where else can you get an interest free loan for a year for underpaying your taxes???

We'll be heading to Cancun in January. Have been doing it for 17+ years. Got my airline tickets in March before everything went bonkers with the air industry. Have cut back on using my truck and a couple of other things.

As much as I love my Cancun vacations, if the hotel and air prices go up any more, then we'll stay home and vacation at MN lakefront resorts, waterparks, ski resorts etc. . It's not Mexico, but still pretty enjoyable. I am keeping my fingers crossed that things will level off, although I don't think that will happen anytime soon. I believe we will soon be taking a long break from our Mexico vacations if prices continue to rise. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

Like Al, Ron and I just bought a brand new Toyota Prius, which gets 48 mpg in the CITY. The mpg is awesome and it's even better that we carpool together to work, so gas prices aren't really an issue for us. Meanwhile most of our friends and family are choking at the pump while feeding their very hungry huge SUV's.....sucks to be them is all I can say. We only drive our gas guzzler when we have all the kids with us. The gasoline savings will only help us save more for vacations. Gotta love that!

I hope you'll get a trip in Tim, but I don't blame you for being shy about it, as our economy is totally in the toilet.

I am thankful that I booked three future trips before everyhing went nuts. Whew! At least I know we have that to look forward to. :)

Any money we spend for a Mexico vacay will help our US economy. We're buying US packages for flights and hotels, airport parking, food and so forth. We're paying our neighbor kids or whomever to tend to our houses/yards/garbage/gardens/snow removal etc. We're helping to keep our US pilots flying, as well as flight attendants etc. Book your trip and help our economy!! :) :J) :) :J)

Of course, we're also helping Mexico's economy, but I'm cool with that, too.
Jodi.....you go girl !!!!

Al..let me correct myself....our airfare to Cancun was around 500.00 in the past....I will not pay any airline 825.00 to go to Cancun...for us it is not worth that price of airare....we will be going to Puerto Vallarta and the airfare is about the same...so to be honest our choice is Puerto Vallarta over Cancun...we will travel in Oct/Nov but will stay in the states and that will help our economy.....

A trip to Cancun will always be in our budget. We will still go. I'll cut back on other things if necessary, but I WILL NOT give up my annual trip to Cancun. Still trying for a trip in August. Not giving up on that yet.
wise planning. :)
