Cancun Trip Report - Day 6
Lisa in MN 3/25/08 21:38

During our stay at the Omni, I actually saw 3 different iguanas. A big one, which we named Iggy, Sr., a medium one, which we named Iggy Jr. and a smaller one, which was "Little Iggy". I can tell Little Iggy is young and new to people because he was really skittery and ran and hid whenever you got anywhere near him, unlike the other two. Found Little Iggy hiding in his hole Friday morning. All you can see is the end of his tail.

Today we spent the day on the beach. And soaked up the sun.

Security at the Omni and, I think, at most of the hotels along the hotel zone, have strict rules of where beach vendors are allowed to be. I learned this talking with Omni staff during previous trips. I got a kick out of watching beach vendors trying not to break the rules in front of security. I know they are not supposed to approach guests at their palapas and beach chairs and are to stay within the border of where the waves break on the beach. I was humored watching this beach vendor trying to make a sunglasses sale while an Omni security guard watches on to make sure he doesn't cross the border of where he's supposed to stand.

This woman has the right idea. I wish I was sitting in her chair right now...

Now, I haven't talked much about this guy, but he is an absolutely amazing man. As some on this board may know him, this is Moises, one of the beach waiters at the Omni. Works his butt off and is always smiling and anxious to make you happy.

We met up on the first day we arrived at the Omni. Of course, he recognized Randy and I. I introduced him to my family. Moises said that recently Jodi showed him a picture of him that I posted on this board (from last year) and his quote to me was, "I was scared", knowing that a photo of him was on the internet. I assured him that it was absolutely harmless and we laughed about it.

Well, my dad warmed up to Moises almost right away and tipped him left and right for services he asked of him during the week. On day 2 when my dad brought his own styrofoam cooler and bottle of wine to the beach, my dad didn't have a wine bottle opener, so he asked Moises to open it for him. Moises did without batting an eye. Throughout the week, Moises offered to bring ice for my dad's cooler. Moises is a great guy.

Moises brought me my morning drink...

Moises brought me my afternoon drink...

Our nieces building another sand castle. Busy bees....

I wish I was under this palapa. I think it's Jodi's though....

While we were relaxing on the beach, my brother and father went deep sea fishing. I remember Rob mentioning it the previous afternoon because he just booked it - a last minute decision.

Now had I thought about it, I would have offered my Dramamine, but not these two fishing and boating veterans....they would never get seasick. WRONG! They were a long way from the rough waters of Minnesota and Wisconsin. They were in rougher waters of the Carribean with waves jolting the boat up and down, back and forth. They both got very sea sick.

Rob caught a Sailfish. Rob said he was trying not to throw up during these photos.

They had a 7am pick-up time. When they came back a little after noon, my dad had the look on his face of, "I have never been so sick in my entire life". They both joined us and Moises took care of them. He's a good man.

That night, we went to dinner at Perico's, which is downtown. Randy and I highly recommended this place for a dinner one night. My dad stayed at the villa and watched the girls. I think he was still recovering from the fishing trip. So the rest of us went. You have to take a taxi there because it's not near a bus line and difficult to find on your own. As I was talking earlier to everyone about how crazy the driving is in Cancun, we were ALMOST in an accident. Not our cabbie's fault. Someone pulled out in front of him and he had to slam on his brakes. Then that person continue to cut off our cabbie and almost hit him again. Unbelievable. Finally, we made it to Perico's.

Randy and I love this place. It's our 3rd time here in the last couple of trips. It's a fun Mexican restaurant with a fun-fiesta kind of atmosphere. They serve drinks on their heads, but the atmosphere isn't as loud or abnoxious as Pat O'Brien's or Carlos and Charlie's. We even got the same waiter that Randy and I had last year. We called him the "Joe Pesci waiter", because he resembled Joe Pesci. He's quite a character too.

Mmmm - another Pina Colada....

They gave us hats to wear.....

Of course, my brother is trying to curve his into a cowboy hat.

The waiters regularily got us ladies up to dance with them.

The food is also very good. I had the fajitas with cheese.

Typo - I can spell obnoxious....

Spelled abnoxious in my report, instead. Oops. A typo I missed during my proofing. Sorry about that.

I've found many many typos in my trip reports after I've posted them on the board :B)

We don't care about typos ... we're just happy to read a trip report!

You're doing a great job, Lisa!!! :)
