going to jw marriott - what not to miss
chris h 3/21/08 19:24

We wont have a car - staying at the JW Marriott- it's a company sponsored trip, me and my Wife. We are not drinkers - what do you all think we shouldn't miss in Cancun for 4 days?

Any good beaches within walking distance (besides the one at the resort)? Are we close to any good restaurants that anyone could recommend for a nice dinner out? Or a place for cheap lunch / breakfast within walking distance?

We are going to Isle Mujeres on a Catamaran trip on one of the days, any suggestions there? We are thinking of just being tourists there.

First time in Cancun, just looking for some advice and suggestions.

Thanks

Chris

Cheap lunch - anywhere in the Punta area of the Cancun hotel zone (the corner of the "7"). Most people on this board would recommend Philly Cheesesteak.

Dinner: Perico's downtown Cancun. A must! Take a taxi there - it's not on the bus line. Great food and service. Good mexican place where the waiters will get you to dance with them and there's a nice little band playing traditional Mexican music. It will be on my Day 6 trip report.

I would also recommend Mextreme. It was on my Day 2 trip report. Great atmosphere, food and service.

El Sombrero bar and restaurant is a nice little place, across the street from Mextreme - both in the Punta area of the Cancun hotel zone.

Isla - enjoy the beaches. Not sure where your catamaran will drop you off, but if you have time, you can take a taxi to Playa Norte, the turtle farm or Dolphin Discovery. See my recent Day 3 trip report.

:V) You probably wouldnt want a car anyway...I wouldnt dare drive and the busses are $.65 and most of the time they will tell you where to get off when you ask ....I enjoy going downtown centro and just walking and looking.........
No matter what you do you cant help but love it....... :)
Mapchicks maps are GREAT...lots of info

Definitely get Mapchick's Cancun guide and Isla guide. They are great, detailed and cheap! Also they are a great resource to keep for future visits or for people you know who are traveling there. In Isla get a couple of motor scooters or a golf cart to tour the whole island.

There are so many good restaurants you just have to decide what you want. Lots of Italian and seafood. Some places that you will be guided to will be touristy and overpriced. You should go to La Isla just for walking around/shopping fun in the evening. At least peek into LaMadonna to see the decor.

The beach is continuous and you will be able to walk north or south for quite some time. The ocean is warm! Lunch at the resort shouldn't be too bad. I never eat breakfast AND lunch but generally one meal then maybe a mid afternoon snack. Just use you senses on what you like.

A few places to consider are: LaHabichuela (romantic dinner), Pizza Rolandi for street cafe pizza and grerat calzones, Cenacolo at Kukulkan mall for Italian (owned by Italians).

Finally I know evryone likes the buses but we always take taxis as even though it costs some more, we make many friends AND learn Spanish at the same time. Just get the price before you get in the cab. between 60 and 100 pesos depending on the trip, unless you are going all the way downtown or to Puerto Juarez then maybe 120. Sometimes getting dowtown can be slow so from your hotel allow at least 45 minutes if you have dinner reservations. :D :D :D
