Vacation Tips All About Cancun Snorkeling with Sea Turtles in Akumal

Snorkeling with Sea Turtles in Akumal

This week we drove from Cancun down to Akumal to snorkel with sea turtles. This is something I have been wanting to do for a very long time and I am so thankful we finally did it!  It took us about an hour and 15 minutes to reach Akumal, make the U-turn, then enter Akumal right by Hotel Akumal Caribe. We parked for free in the Akumal Visitor center and walked to the beach, about a 3 minute walk. Since we brought our own mask, snorkel and fins, all we had to do was to walk straight into the water!

Just look for the other people snorkeling and swim out to them. We only had to swim for a couple of yards before we saw our first turtle. They are so docile and they don’t care a thing about humans at all.  There were snorkelers around the turtles and they just went about their eating and swimming, totally ignoring us.

We also saw a small angel ray that we followed for a while. After snorkeling for about 45 minutes we probably saw 5-6 turtles. They were always by themselves, never in groups.

I can wait to go back during the turtle hatching season in July – November.

Check out the underwater photos & video of the sea turtles in Akumal Bay.
